Located in the heart of Frankfurt, the city almost seems to wrap around this opulent hotel out of deference to its long and stylish history dating from 1876. Well-appointed rooms and top-notch service staff make the hotel a perfect oasis, or a fine spot for client meetings – heads of state often stay here. Top it off with massage services, a solarium, steam room and sauna, and these five stars seem to gleam a bit brighter than most.

KNOWLEDGE

World-class shopping has finally arrived in Frankfurt with the grand opening of the MyZeil mall complex (www.myzeil.de). You can’t miss the stunning steel-glass structure located on the city’s main shopping street. With eight floors of shopping, eating, and high-end brands, your own wallet is bound to take a hit.

The last Saturday of the month is Satourday, which means free entry to most museums along Frankfurt’s famous Museumsufer, the southern embankment of the River Main complete with a high concentration of fascinating museums. Free admission to museums such as the German Film, Jewish History and Archaeology museums make this an enlightening and cost-effective day.

Also along the Museumsufer, a lively flea market rolls in every Saturday, with everything from used electronics, Turkish rugs, antiques, and practically everything in between. If shopping isn’t your thing, a jogging path along both banks of the river makes for a scenic and lively tour of the bustling city and river traffic.

SECRETS

A new walking tour in Frankfurt offered by (mostly) native English speakers recently set up shop (www.insidertours.com). Through Frankfurt on Foot, tours are available every day starting at 10.30am and don’t need reservations. For €12 a three-hour guided tour of the city, plus interesting tidbits about Frankfurt and its history, are given in small, personal groups.
